Haiti: one week after the Hurricane

October 11, 2016

Last week, Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti causing the biggest humanitarian crisis since the devastating earthquake of 2010, particularly in the South.

Over the last few days, several people, including members of the media, have contacted us to know the position of KANPE towards this emergency. Although the hurricane did not directly affect the areas where the communities supported by KANPE are located (near Thomonde in the Central Plateau region), we are closely monitoring the potential resurgence of infectious diseases such as cholera.

It is important to remember that the MISSION of KANPE is not to provide humanitarian relief, but to support the poorest populations of the Central Plateau towards autonomy and help decrease their vulnerability to diseases and natural disasters. KANPE’s mission lies in the development of communities over the long term.

In order to reduce those risks and to have a sustainable impact, KANPE acts on several fronts, including:

  • Health care through a medical clinic providing free care for the population, including the treatment of cholera.
  • In environment through reforestation campaign and training farmers on soil protection.

HAITI THREATENED BY A CHOLERA EPIDEMIC

Since 2011, more than 1,500 cases of cholera have been treated at the clinic supported by KANPE. This year, already nearly 80 cases were detected and treated. A week after the passage of Matthew, experts predict an outbreak of this disease in the country. With the help of our health partner Zanmi Lasante (PIH), we are preparing to fight infectious diseases that could resurface in the coming months.

We were planning the launch our first major annual fundraising campaign in November: Stand With KANPE. In light of these events and the risk of epidemic, we decided to stick to our plan.

If you want to support KANPE to reduce the vulnerability of the poorest populations, you can make a donation now by clicking here. Your donations will support the actions of KANPE in health (with the medical clinic and the fight against cholera), in agriculture and reforestation, in education, in leadership and to support families.

If you wish to support disaster relief for the population in the Southern region, we recommend making donations to organizations specialized in humanitarian assistance, or with local organizations that currently support these populations, such as our health partner Zanmi Lasante (Partners in Health).

Mèsi for your support!
