Inclusive Leadership for Stronger Communities in Haiti
Since beginning our work in Baille Tourible, KANPE has prioritized an inclusive approach that empowers local communities to take charge of their own development. In this remote village of Haiti’s Central Plateau, women’s associations once operated on the margins, with little involvement in decision-making. By fostering their participation alongside youth and farmers’ organizations, we have helped create a more dynamic and representative leadership that strengthens the entire community.
Environmental challenges, particularly deforestation and water scarcity, have worsened conditions in Baille Tourible. Through our agroforestry and reforestation initiatives, in partnership with Age of Union, we support local groups in restoring degraded lands, improving food security, and building resilience to climate change. These programs are designed and led by the community, ensuring their long-term impact.
Strengthening local leadership is central to our approach. Encouraging intergenerational participation and democratic governance has led to greater engagement and ownership among residents. When all voices are included, solutions are more effective, sustainable, and deeply rooted in the needs of the community.
In the article “In Haiti, Inclusive Leadership is Helping Communities Thrive,” Age of Union highlights how our initiatives are transforming lives in Baille Tourible.
