January 9, 2012

KANPE begins the new year filled with optimism after coming closer, in 2011, to its goal of ensuring the financial autonomy of families in Baille Tourible in order to create a ripple effect in the community. Here are the 11 steps taken in that direction in 2011 :

On the ground

1. KANPE, Partners In Health and Fonkoze have combined their expertise with that of local Baille Tourible associations to identify the community’s most vulnerable families and to adopt a concerted approach to care and services in this Haitian central plateau community..

2. 331 families are now enrolled in the Baille Tourible KANPE program.

3. Baille Tourible’s more than 6,000 residents now have access to a functioning health clinic and to a medical professional located right in their neighbourhood.

4. To date, 1,500 individuals have received full medical checkups; for most of them, it was their first ever.

5. More than 1,500 individuals now have access tosafe drinking water, lowering the risk of cholera transmission.

6. Seven specialized social workers have been trained as mentors and meet weekly with the families of Baille Tourible to provide thempersonalized guidance through literacy, math classes and health training.

In the business community here at home

7. BMO Financial Group and Power Corporationhave joined forces with KANPE to provide financial support for its operations on the ground for the next five years.

8. Montréal company DAVID’S TEA has launchedKANPE Tea, available in more than 60 local stores as well as online at www.davidstea.com; the profits from KANPE Tea sales contribute to finance operations on the ground.

In the KANPE community at home and abroad

9. Air Canada’s Action Haiti committee of employees has supported KANPE since the very first months having made a $100,000 donation, as well as being involved in providing support on the ground.

10. One hundred volunteers and forty ambassadors are mobilized across Canada, the United States, Italy and France, spreading awareness about KANPE and organizing and participating in fundraising initiatives.

11. The book Mountains Beyond Mountains has been translated and published by Boréal. With a new preface by Régine Chassagne, “Soulever les montagnes“ chronicles the life of Paul Farmer , Governor of KANPE and co-founder of Partners In Health. All profits from the book’s sale are donated to KANPE.

All this work has been accomplished thanks to the devotion of the KANPE community. KANPE wishes to thank each of you for supporting us in breaking the cycle of poverty in Haiti. Let’s continue together throughout the new year!
