Happy New Year’s to all!

2020 has been a tumultuous year! A year filled with challenges for all of us and for the entire Baille Tourible community that you help us support in the Central Plateau in Haiti.

With its 10 years of experience, KANPE was able to face the COVID-19 pandemic and seize the opportunity to strengthen itself and support the community through new and inspiring projects of which we are all proud. Find below a summary of our actions* in 2020.

Food security and Climate resilienceStartup of the experimental farm; production of more than 20,000 seedlings (11,201 fruit trees and 9,584 forest trees), and distribution of 11,530 seedlings to our beneficiaries; training for the members of seven local beneficiary associations on seedling production techniques and their maintenance, the establishment of flower beds and the production of natural insecticides; distribution of food rations to 450 public school students during the lockdown period in Haiti due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the launch of three collective nurseries and 500 subsistence gardens producing 56,000 vegetable seedlings for the benefit of the most vulnerable families in the community. 

Health & Nutrition – Training and implementation of new safety protocols for the prevention of COVID-19 infection; installation of 4 water stations at the clinic and at the public school for handwashing to prevent infection by COVID-19; training and deployment of a dozen young people in the population to inform about COVID-19 and raise awareness about its prevention methods – 1902 families reached and visited 2 times each; distribution of prevention and protection materials against COVID-19 to our beneficiaries including :

  • 2,000 washable masks;
  • 3,814 sanitary kits including soap and chlorine for water;
  • Information and awareness posters installed at key points in the territory;
  • Purchase and commissioning of an ambulance vehicle to transport the very sick to a larger health facility.

EducationInformation sessions on the pandemic and its prevention methods; recovery of 3,241 books already in use, and redistribution to students; distribution of 57 radios and 464 books for conducting distance learning reading programs during the lockdown in Haiti.

Leadership & Entrepreneurship –Training of 50 leaders in charge of accompanying the beneficiaries of our vegetable garden program; resumption of the marching band’s activities in September following the application of a rigorous health protocol; training in basic accounting for 15 representatives of the 3 women’s associations of Baille Tourible; cleaning and beautification of the clinic by the women’s associations.

Local infrastructure strengthening – Fencing and preparation of the ground for the start of the experimental farm, construction of a new triage space at the clinic to facilitate the physical distancing of patients; renovation work at the public school (450 students): repair of beams, replacement of sheeting; repair of the oven in the school canteen kitchen; steel sheeting replacement and installation of a separation wall (between the 5th and 6th-grade classes); repair of 45 benches; manufacture of 21 new benches, 6 cabinets, and 6 teacher’s chairs.
