Empowering Women to Take Action
In Baille Tourible, women have always been at the heart of economic life. They sell, trade, feed families, and animate the markets. Yet for a long time, they lacked access to financial resources to grow their small businesses.
In 2022, the KANPE Foundation, in collaboration with Sere pou Chofe (Save for Tomorrow), decided to take action. Together, they launched a solidarity microcredit program designed for rural women entrepreneurs—a simple yet powerful model: accessible loans, training, and collective savings.
From the very first cycles, enthusiasm was high. Sixty-eight women participated in the initial cycle. Six months later, all had repaid their loans, with a repayment rate approaching 100%. Today, the program is in its seventh cycle, with over 740 cumulative loans. Some women are on their third or fourth loan, expanding their businesses, launching new activities, or diversifying their income streams.
The loans are used to buy and resell food, hygiene, or household products, or to fund a small workshop, shop, or livestock project. But beyond the numbers, the program has created a space for autonomy, solidarity, and trust.
Women’s Associations Launch Their Own Microcredit Fund
In 2024, local women’s associations launched their own microcredit fund, financed by the interest generated. This was a historic milestone: women are no longer just beneficiaries—they have become managers, decision-makers, and trainers for new participants.
Under the supervision of trained community agents, each cycle strengthens women’s financial and entrepreneurial skills. The goal: for the fund to keep revolving, to grow, and to remain fully managed by the community, ensuring its long-term sustainability.
Microcredit does more than finance projects; it builds confidence, values local expertise, and supports pathways to lasting autonomy.
