Agroforestry

Nourishing and Preserving

Agroforestry promotes productive agriculture, land restoration, and stronger rural communities. KANPE helps communities develop sustainable agroforestry systems that allow farmers to grow food, reforest their land, and generate income in an ecological and resilient way.

Our Actions

In rural Haiti, farmers face soil erosion, limited access to seeds and sustainable agricultural techniques, and unstable incomes. KANPE supports agroforestry development through:

  • Model forests to restore soils: KANPE has established three model forests combining fruit trees, medicinal plants, and food crops. These areas combat erosion, enrich the soil, and improve agricultural yields.
  • Nurseries for the future: Each year, our experimental farm produces over 25,000 seedlings of fruit and forest trees, distributed to farmers and transplanted into mini-orchards and model forests.
  • Training and support for farmers: KANPE organizes agricultural training in agroforestry and soil conservation, helping families adopt more resilient and profitable practices.
  • Beekeeping as an economic lever: In partnership with GAFE, we introduced beekeeping in Baille Tourible. This project provides a new income source while supporting crop pollination.
  • Seed banks for food sovereignty: We have established seed banks to ensure access to black beans and other essential crops. In 2024, women’s associations strengthened their role by creating their own seed bank, promoting greater economic inclusion for women.

Our Impact

  • Restored and more productive land: Model forests and agroforestry practices reduce erosion, improve soil fertility, and stabilize crop yields in a changing climate.
  • Enhanced food security: Seed banks and family gardens provide access to essential crops, supporting a more regular and local food supply.
  • Diversified incomes for rural families: Agroforestry, livestock, and beekeeping create new revenue sources, reducing dependence on single crops and strengthening household economic resilience.
  • Better-equipped farmers: Training and technical support enable producers to adopt sustainable practices, improve their skills, and share knowledge within their communities.
  • Increased role of women in the local economy: Women’s management of seed banks strengthens their economic autonomy and leadership in agricultural activities.

KANPE believes in regenerative and inclusive agriculture, where every farmer can build a more prosperous future while protecting the environment.
